RED CHIEF INJURED
LANDBRAE AS JUMPER
Special. WANGANUT, this day. Red Chief gave promise of winning some money in jumping events this winter, but unfortunately the Colossus gelding injured himself through overreaching and will be out of action until next term. This is bad luck for his ownertrainer, C. Gordon, who had him in splendid order. .
The winter racing circuit on this coast will open at Hawera next Saturday week, when the Egmont Racing Club's steeplechase meeting will be held. The MartonAshhurst combined meeting will be held on the following Saturday, and a fortnight later will come the Wanganui Club's fixture on June 2 and 4. The Manawatu winter meeting is set down for June 16. Rita Jackson intends taking Landbrae to Hawera for the hack flat event. The half-brother by Phaleron Bay to Baron Bold has keen hitting out ,in attractive style, and has shown a lot of pace. He is only a three-year-old, but has won three or four jumping events at shows. The four-year-old Leighon gelding Sketch, which E. Nixon has in work, will make his debut at Mar ton. He is fairly well forward and knows how to gallop.
Jim Boyd has given Good Effort some sprinting recently, and the son of Robin Goodfellow has been hitting out well. He is to have a race at Marton.
Derrbgue is to race at Hawera. Since winning at Feilding the Foxlight filly has done well, and J. Campbell should pick up another race or two with the filly in the near future. Rebate Exceptionally lit H. Benge is keeping Rebate at steady work. The Defoe mare is in great fettle. It is a pity she is a bad traveller, but she may give a taste of her real class at the Wanganui meeting. Hughie Johnston has Kilarney Boy in good order. The son of Saleve had everything in his favour when he won at Feilding, getting a flying start, and this enabled him to lead all the way to squeeze home. Kilarney Boy will be a runner at Hawera. Alright is back on the tracks and he may be given a race at Wanganui next month. He is in great heart, but is being kept at trotting and cantering in an effort to curb his tearaway habit. Amigo has been put into work again after a spell on a farm since, last May. He. appears to have thrown off the lameness that came against him, and is big and burly. If he goes on the right way Amigo will be given a run in the sevenfurlong event at Hawera. The two-year-old Michael has been taken up again to be prepared for his three-vear-old engagements. The son of Broiefort showed promise in his races ami he may win some money for Mr. A. H. Hurley next term, when he will race as a ge vi's r io r n has been given some sprinting and should be in good shape fat the juvenile event at Hawera, although she lias had an interrupted preparation beCa H e Calfahan,' formerly associated with H Benge in a training partnership, has started on his own account as n public turner at Waverley. He has the five-year-old Bulandshar gelding Zahra and the two-year-old Top Draw under his; care. Zahra won a race at Taranaki in March and is a good sort.
