In days of old when knights were bold, one who held land from and rendered homage to a superior person was called a varlet, vassal, knave? 5. D.C.M. after a soldier's name means that he has won the Distingushed Conduct Medal; but the same letters have a meaning that is much less pleasant for the soldier; in fact, demn'd unpleasant!
