4.30 p.m. WASHINGTON, April 27.
Admiral Nimitz' communique says that the 24th Army Corps made a general advance in southern Okinawa yesterday and by 6 p.m. elements of the 27 th Infantry Division had reached the vicinity of Machinato airfield, near the west coast, after by-passing enemy strongpoints at Nakam village. In the central and eastern segments local gains were made against enemy mortar and machine gun fire. The attack was resumed this morning. Marines continued to patrol in northern Okinawa yesterday and to-day a few enemy aircraft appeared over our forces. Early this morning three were shot down by one of our minesweepers.
Carrier aircraft attacks against the Sakishimas continued yesterday. Mitchells attacked harbour installations in Chichi Jima yesterday. Fighters and torpedo planes bombed Palaus to-day. Other fighters attacked Yap.
