BRANTOME EXCELS

A Potential Northern Winner: Royal Musk Surprises In Big Race: Nepeta Beats Sprinters For Eisenhower

Although it is a far cry from what is not, much more than hack h«r<He racing to a Great Northern victory, Brantome, which made an exhibition of the field in. the Cunningham Hurdles at the Waikato patriotic meeting this afternoon, is sure of a great deal of attention for the big race at the Auckland meeting early in June. Brantome, a half brother to the well-performed Beau Leon, jumped in dashing style to-day, giving an outstanding performance for a greenhorn. The big race of the day, the Churchill Handicap, was won well by Royal Musk, which ran on very well in the home stretch to defeat the topweight Neenah, with the favourite, Gay Chat, third. Nepeta, which, like Brantome, races in the colours of Mr. E. H. Cucksey, of Te Awamutu, brought off the second leg of the donble by defeating Expellant somewhat easily.

Gay Chat was made a hot favourite for the Churchill Handicap. Money, however, in this race, did not count, for, after being tailed off early, the best Gay Chat could do was to finish a moderate third, while Royal Musk simply romped home from the top-weight Neenah. The conditions of racing to-day were not pleasant, showers falling during the morning, added to which some folk were bemoaning the lack of woollens. Nevertheless, there was a good attendance and racing was conducted well on a soft track. Royal Musk was 6-7 in the betting and he was always well placed, his rider, C. B. Goulsbro, sitting in behind Neenah, ridden by \V. Ensor, as they came through the top stretch and into the straight. Royal Musk had the drop on Neenah halfway down the running and drew away to win by a length and a half, the favourite Gay Chat coming home well, but only to be a poor third. Dumbo, Bronzo and Royal Musk made most of the early running from Llandine, but once they were opposite the stand with five furlongs to go, Neenah dashed through to the front to open up a six lengths' lead at the three, where Dumbo was heading the others with Bronzo, Royal Musk, Llandine and Peterhead close handy. As they came round the home turn, Royal Musk closed on Neenah, the others weakening as Gay Chat ran past the beaten horses, and in the ultimate Royal Musk won very easily. Gay Chat was three lengths behind Neenah and then came Llandine, i

Dashing Display

An outsider, Roman Orator, 10-8 in the betting, gave a dashing display of jumping to win the Freyberg Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase. He was prominent from the outset and, although Moko Moko was handy to him, and going well half a miie from home, where the latter fell, the result may not have been different even without the disappearance from the race of Moko Moko. Extra set the pace and had a good lead coming to the third fence, where he ran off, being followed by Traymond, this leaving Moko Moko in front from Roman Orator. Moko Moko led over the double in front of the stand four lengths clear of Roman Orator, with Colonel Bing, Haereatu and Brown Ronald following, , Roman Orator took control in the back stretch and, jumping well under a nice hold, was well clear of Moko Moko when the latter crashed, this leaving Colonel Bing in second' place and a gap to Brown Ronald and Wildore. Bar accident, Roman Orator had the race well and truly won before turning for home, and, easing up by 15 lengths from Brown nothing untoward happening, he won Ronald, which beat Colonel Bing three lengths to second place. The fourth horse was Lord Mascot and then Wildore. Haereatu fell over the concluding stages when he had no chance. Black Beret's ' Good Showing Black Beret gave by far his best exhibition for some considerable time when he fought on to worry Theoress out of the thick end of the purse in-the First Montgomery Hack. Theoress cleared out in the early part, and after she had been in the lead at the home turn her supporters w£re on good terms with themselves right up to the distance. However, in the closing stages she was no mjitch for the winner. Land Warden, the hot favourite, did not enter the scene until the very .deciding part, when he flashed up to run third and draw attention to his immediate prospects. Jeep was first to break the line, from Theoress and Laddie Boy. Theoress took over within a furlong and she was clear across the top from Laddie Boy, Jeep, Prince Revel, Jocelyn Ann and Old Mack. Theoress was still in the lead as they straightened up from Black Beret, Laddie Boy, Jeep, Prince Revel, Jocelyn Ann, Land Warden and Pink Shell. At the distance Theoress had maintained her position, but Black Beret beat her by half a length, with Land Warden finishing on for third in front of Prince Re', el, Laddie Boy, Jeep, Blonde Gipsy and Jocelyn Ann. Brantome Wins Eas'* - Brantome, which finished second to Spirillum, at Ellerslie recently, was backed down to a little bit better than five to two for the Cunningham Hurdles, and once his rider asked him the question, the halfbrother to Beau Leon never left the issue in doubt, winning pulling up by 12 lengths. The race needs little description, except in so far as to state that Brantome followed the two pace-makers, Hunting Camp and Gay Lysander, to the six-furlong peg, where the favourite ran past them to open up an extending lead and to win as desired. Brome ran on solidly to be second, giving his best performance to date, and Spring Day was a moderate third. Hunting Mac was fourth and then Phaleron and Etaro. Beneve's Good Style Beneve was a strong favourite for the gentlemen riders' race, the Stalin Plate, and he finished in most effective style to win going away from Fox Hunting and New Battle. Manora made the early pace and was followed past the stand by Highland View, Ballinasloe, British Patrol ana Skateaway. - Racing into the back

stretch, Manora still held the lead from Highland View and Ballinasloe, with Skateaway now lying fourth In p ront of Paid, Myain, New Battle and Tightline. Highland View hit the front three furlongs from home and led into the straight from New Battle, Manora, Myain and Sweet Baffles. Highland View stopped in the straight and Beneve, finishing with a sustained run, went on to beat Fox Hunting by two lengths and a half, with New Battle four lengths away. Manora weakened into fourth in front of Ballinsloe, Esmonde, Lucky Alex, and Rival. Trainer Gilmer's Double Another long shot, somewhere about 20 to one. came home in the Second Montgomery Hack Handicap. This was Brown Atom, which completed a winning double for the Te Rapa trainer A. J. Gilmer, who had won the First Montgomery Handicap with Black Beret, also a long shot. Brown Atom, a three-year-old son of Revelation, won very easily and evidently is a useful galloper, as he was on a tight rein all the way down the straight to win from Colonel Dink. Fencourt was the first to show out, but the field had not gone far before Persisto and Brown Atom were up with him. This trio led across the top from Colonel Dink, Cricket Ball and Zulu Boy, with little between them, 1 but once into the home stretch Brown Atom drew out to win as he liked by a length and a half from Colonel Dink, Golden One being three lengths away, third, followed by Tower Lady, Zulu Boy and Master Dink.

Wins Easily

From a good start Nepeta quickly took up a prominent position In the Eisenhower Handicap, Tutere leading the wav from Powys. Crossing the top. Tutere was just clear of Powys, with Nepeta close handy, while Expeilant and Altess were moving through from the ruck. And so they came round the home turn, with Powys having a slight advantage on Tutere, which was dropping out as Nepeta forged ahead. Nepeta was clear at the distance and came on to win easily by two lengths from Expeilant, as Altess ran into third place ahead of Powys, Merry Vaals, and Lady Pay. Victory to Another Outsider Riverlands Roe, or at least the rider, Meynell, stole a march on the field in the Roosevelt Memorial Hack Handicap. This hitherto disappointing son of Baffles had most people baffled even to-day because he did not stop on this occasion, actually increasing his advantage over the last part to win just as he pleased. Valley Boy, the favourite, which was running out hack engagements, might have done better if his rider had realised that Riverlands Roe would not on this occasion come back to the field. And so, Valley Boy was second, with Hunting Park, which had run a sound race throughout a good third. Hippodrome was fourth, and then came Cracroft and Princess Doria. Totalisator Figure. The totlisator figure for the Waikato Racing Club's patriotic meeting at Te Rapa to-day was £62,152 10/. There was no comparable meeting last year.
