MIDNIGHT COURT
POLICE RAID SEQUEL BREACHES OF GAMING ACT O.C. WHANGAREI, this day. As a sequel to a police raid on the men's quarters at the Moerewa freezing works late on Tuesday night, 24 men appeared before a special Court shortly before midnight on charges of breaches of the Gaming Act. Tvvo detectives and four constables from Whangarei and Kawakawa conducted the raid. Complaints had been received by the police from the wives of some Maori employees at the works and from the Tribal Committee, said Detective-Sergeant Finlay. They stated that a section of the men were dissipating their wages in gambling and in instances the wives received no money on pay days. The police found two gambling schools operating, the games being two-up and Slippery Sam. One Maori who was charged, in addressing the Court, said the biggest percentage of 300 workers liked a gamble. He suggested that if one worker was vested with authority gambling could be stopped. Mr. Finlay said gambling was a question for each man individually. If workable, however, there was some merit in the suggestion. Robert Clyde and Harry Lemon were each fined £10 and costs on charges of using premises as a common gaming house, while the 22 other men each were fined £5 and costs.
