TAX AFTER WAR

NO DECISION MADE

STATEMENT BY MR. NASH

O.C. WELLINGTON, this day. Commenting to-day on the statement reported to have been made by Mr. Hackett, Government member for Grey Lynn, at Opotiki, regarding transfer of the national security wage, tax after the war to increase the social security revenue, the acting-Prime Minister, Mr. Nash, said that on no occasion had it been said that the Social Security Act would be amended in a way. that would increase the annual expenditure of £31,000,000.

"I myself," continued Mr. Nash,, "have said that to give all the benefit without any income or other test would cost at the present rates £31,000,000. Other suggestions referred to in the report are, with many others, being carefully considered with the Government minimum family income proposals. No decision has been made on the subjects mentioned."

Asked whether Mr. Hackett was correct in stating that the Government intends introducing legislation abolishing the country quota next session, Mr. Nash replied: "The Government's policy on the electoral question will be announced as soon as it has been determined."
