LOST FROM CANOE
DISTRESS SIGNAL MISSED
p.A. •• 3 Evidence that, distress signals from the crew of a canoe off St -Kilda beach had either not been recognised or not been taken seriously was.submitted at an inquest into the presumed death.on December 10 last of James Purdie,. aged .20, who was last seen endeavouring to' swim ashore near St. Clair cliffs after he and his two companions had abandoned their canoe about a mile offshore. The evidence also showed that the person who had- seen-the - canoe passings off St. Clair beach had. notified > the St.. Kilda Surf Life Saving Club by telephone, but that, whoever took the message had taken no action; Returning a verdict of. accidental drowning the coroner, Mr. said it was most unfortunate that the signals had not. been recognised, and that the message had not been acted upon. He added that the .incident, might have the effect of bringing forward a proposal for an organised system of patrol at beaches.
