THE PRISON SYSTEM

Discipline must be maintained and orders obeyed for the smooth running of prison institutions, but; the orders must be reasonable. Our Labour Government has abolished the death penalty, and the flogging of bad criminals, and it is high time they brought in the long advocated prison reforms. The days of the "dummy" and close confinement, and whitewashed walls to look at closely day and night and the bread-and-water method of trying to break a man, should be past; they belong to the dark past ages. I trust the Howard League for Prison Reform, the leaders of the various churches and other authoritative people will take constitutional action to have our prison system brought up to date with the best, and in keeping with our other leading social legislation. Prison sentences should be entirely the prerogative of a magistrate. They are a very serious matter, and might easily be abused. INTERESTED
