ROMAN POTTERY

ALTON, Hants

A historical talk which Major A. G. Wade had with some of his Home Guard men recently has led to the discovery of a vast field of Roman pottery in Alice Holt Forest, on the outskirts of Bentley Village. After his talk Major Wade invited questions, and Private Disney asked him if he had heard of the old pottery site in Alice Holt. Private Disney said his grandfather had mentioned it to him. Eventually he took Major Wade to the forest and there he discovered a very extensive Roman pottery site. After inviting the interest of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, Major Wade began excavations of a private character and four feet below ground came across sherds enough to fill a cart. Major Wade said: "It is an amazing discovery. There are literally wagon-loads of pottery there and the site stretches for several miles from Kingsley, in North Hampshire, to Farnhsm, in Surrey."
