TEST SERIES RECORD
Hammond's Total Best For England But Smaller Than Bradman's
Cricket records credited to Walter Hammond by H. A. De Lacey in the Sporting Globe, Melboure, and reprinted in the Sports Edition on March 31 are challenged by a contributor. It was stated, inter alia, that Hammond had scored the greatest number of runs in a Test series —905 against Australia in 1928-1929. an average of 113. This statement was based on Wisden's records, but it omitted the proviso "by an English batsman."
Actually the record in a series of Tests is held by Don Bradman, who in the following season, during the Australian tour of England, scored 974 runs with an average of 139. Bradman's scores were as follows: 8 and 131 at Nottingham, 254 and 1 at Lords. 334 at 14 at, Manchester, and 232 at the Oval.
