GARAGE AND PLANT CEMENT COY'S LOSS O.C. WHANGAREI, this day. Part of the plant of the Portland Cement Company : at Waro, near Hikurangi, together with a large garage building, was destroyed by fire on Thursday night. The building was securely locked when the -men left for the night, and everything appeared in order. When the fire was discovered.. the Hikurangi fire brigade was called, but the flames had too big a hold and nothing could be saved.
The loss of plant is serious for the company, owing to difficulties of replacement. The total value of the loss is not available, but will run into many thousands of pounds. Inquiry into the fire has brought to light some suspicious circumstances which the police are investigating.
