MR. FISHER'S VIEWS

After reading Mr. F. M. B. Fisher's address to the Creditmen's Club, I cannot quite decide whether Mr. Fisher meant to condemn Mr. Churchill or was advocating the Soviet system, and I think a fairer view of the subject would be to go back another ten years. The Russian revolution started during the 1914-18 war and resulted in the defeat of the Russian armies fighting then, as now, opposed to the Germans, and had it not been that the then Allies were able fully to occupy the German armies and eventually conquer them, the Soviet system, in all probability, would not have come into being—Russia would have been dominated by ; Germany. So n\ucli for that. 'Subsequent events seem to me to have proved Mr. Churchill's action right, and again during this war period Russia was in desperate danger of being completely over-run. Again, Mr. Churchill's decisions and help were greatly instrumental in enabling Russia to recover and make a .great "come-back," admittedly to the benefit of the whole world, so far. Time alone can reveal the true results of this obligatory alliance. I use the term because Russia was forced to fight, and we as upholders of freedom obliged to go to her aid, but I think that we would all be wise to watch very carefully and think very deeply before taking sides or voicing criticisms to the hurt of one whose great courage and foresight has undoubtedly given us the freedom which we enjoy to-day. F. A. SMITH.
