DIED BY OWN SWORD

MARINE BEHEADS JAP NEW YORK. A tough United States marine scaling Mount Suribachi, on Iwo Jima, surprised a Japanese armed with a sword in one of the volcano's caves.. "Come on, give, Tojo," he said to the cowering Japanese. When the Japanese clung to the sword the marine took it from him. Then he used it to cut off the Jap's head. Another marine who stormed Suribachi reported: "A Jap jumped my foxhole and bayoneted me in the shoulder. I cut his throat."

During lulls in the assault on the mountain, marines played with a kitten which had wandered into the battle area. Others played gin rummy. One rode a Japanese bicycle along a mountain track.
