Lance Wing Gains Friends For Sockburn Handicap
P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Lance Wing and Gunga Din were responsible for the best trial over a mile on the outside of the course proper at Riccarton this morning, finishing together to record 1.42 4-5, the first half in 50 2-sa. Lance Wing was doing his work more easily than his companion at the end. Conditions were excellent, though many of the horses worked, including Typhoon, were restricted to pace work.
Lord Advocate broke away clear of Justitia, First In and Immediate at the six furlongs, and though they had closed up a little starting the run home, Lord Advocate was always in front, finishing three lengths clear in 1.16 2-5, the final four in 49 3-ss. First In went a shade length, with Justitia beaten off. Desert Strife worked evenly over a mile in 1.46. Koa-Manu sprinted from the four furlongs in 50s, Palissy taking 51 l-ss. Vafort was galloping easily with Quick Rise at the finish of seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5, the opening three taking 37 3-ss.
Donegal Bay Fit Donegal Bay appeared under a good hold while sprinting five furlongs in 1.3 3-5, the first in 13s. She looks very fit. Authentic did his six furlongs in 1.18 3-5, the opening two in 2G 2-ss. Tuis and Tagore went over the same ground in 1.17 4-5, their opening two in 26 4-ss. Cooraclare finished fast to complete five furlongs in 1.3 2-5 after taking 13 2-5s for the first furlong. Lalla Meer required 1.50 for a mile, though she came home the last half in 53 l-ss. Gigli had his neck to spare from Al-Sirat, with Kashmiri, which dropped out early in the run home, well back after finishing five furlongs in 1.2 3-5, the first in 13s. Gigli and Al-Sirat came home strongly. Liquidate and Foreign Ways were together at the end of six furlongs in 1.17 3-5, the opening two in 275. Bridge Acre drew out nicely to beat Lord Nuffield by a length in the last few strides of four furlongs in 49 3-ss. Leighmond and Appeasement took 52s in a similar trial.
Ijowry Bay Finishes On Lord Broiefort led Hormuz and Lowry Bay over the first half of a mile in 51 4-ss, but Lowry Bay forged to the front in the straight to finish clear in 1.43 2-5. Hamish shaded Tikakoura at the end of six furlongs in 1.18 3»5, the first two taking 26 3-ss. Foxhaven was slightly in front of Chicago in a similar trial in 1.18 1-5, the opening two in 27 4-ss. Night Believer sprinted seven furlongs in 1.32 1-5, the first three in 39 3-ss. He had big weight up. Buddy was no match for his stablemate, Bitter Sweet, over seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5, Bitter Sweet winning by two lengths. Their first three were run in 39 2-ss. Longsword was being eased up at the end of five furlongs in 1.3 2-5, the first in 13 l-ss. Double Cross ran his mile in 1.47 2-5, the first half in 53 2-os, while Outstanding reeled off four furlongs in 49 3-ss, Finalist and Beau Jewel taking 51 4-ss. Silver Sal and The Vulture ran the last mile of 10 furlongs well in 1.-13 2-5, the final four taking 52 2-ss. They finished together. Whackie and Joygiver sprinted five furlongs smartly in 1.2 2-5, the first in 12 4-ss. Foxcatcher went over the same ground in 1.4 3-5, her first in 12 3-ss. Golden Souvenir, Sing Sing and Royal Rae finished in line at the end of six furlongs in 1.16 4-5, the opening two in 26 4-5. Iron Duke was scratched for the Champagne Stakes and Russley Plate at 9 o'clock this morning. Controller was scratched from all engagements at 11.45 a.m. to-day.
