TELEPHONE TOLL CALLS

The number of calls received on telephone 396, which is listed for , "toll- calls; number not known" in the telephone exchange directory, was mentioned to-day by : the chief postmaster, Mr. C. Clark. said it appeared that many telephone subscribers were not aware that the telephone numbers of ■ subscribers to sub-exchanges as far north as Warkworth and as far south as Mercer were in the directory. Much time would be saved by toll users and toll operators if .the directory was first consulted to ascertain the number of the wanted subscriber and the call then placed at tolls, 390.
