J. H. Opie, who was the winner of the New Zealand pole vault title in 1937 and the shot put in 1940, reappeared at the recent Otago athletic championship meeting after an absence of five years from active competition. Opie, who is a member of the recently-formed Hillside Club, won the shot put and javelin throwing titles, and in spite of his lay-off showed little loss of form. Opie was unable to make the trip to Wellington for the New Zealand championships.
