EFFECTIVE WORK

N.Z. AIR TASK FORCE CONFIRMATION OF DAMAGE R.N.Z.A.F Official News Service : BOUGAINVILLE, March 11. Accurate assessments of the damage done by Corsairs of the New Zealand Air Task Force to enemy targets on Bougainville have been made possible as the result of activity by Australian ground forces, and observations by R.A.F. reconnaissance aircraft. Becauge of the speed at which they travel over the natural cover of the jungle, the New Zealand Corsair pilots often find it impossible to estimate the full effect of their work, and the claims accordingly made are strictly, on a conservative basis. On one occasion the pilots claimed that they had destroyed eight enemy trucks. It is now known that their tally was 20 trucks, one gun and a large number of Japs killed. On another strike they destroyed a 105 mm. gun and killed 30 Japs. In a raid on a suspected naval bivouac and supply area the New Zealand Corsairs only reported that their bombs had fallen on the target. It has since been confirmed that between 80 and 90 enemy naval personnel were killed and that the area was completely devastated.
