NEW SWIMMING POOL

NAPIER STREET SCHOOL Constructed at a cost of £288, half of which was raised in the school district, a new swimming pool was officially opened at the Napier Street School this afternoon. There was a large attendance. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr. W. B. Darlow, in recognition of the practical interest he had shown in the project. The pool, which is one of many which have been constructed in city and suburban schools, is for the purpose of teaching children the.correct style of swimming. Instruction of the 500 pupils on the school roll, ranging from Primer 111. to Standard VI. will be under the direction of teachers, each in charge of a small squad. . •' A , The pool, which measures 40ft by 12ft, and has an average depth of 3ft, contains 9000 gaiions of water. It is situated in the playing area, and is surrounded by a wire netting fence 6ft in height which affords protection while allowing the pool to be open to the air.

The funds, which were raised during the past six months, carried a £ for £ Government subsidy. The construction of the pool was commenced towards the end of the recent school holidays, and the nine members of the school committee undertook the work of excavation and the construction of the fence.
