LOWER WAGE GROUPS
DISSATISFACTION EXPRESSED P.A. WELLINGTON, Friday. Dissatisfaction with the disparity in rates of pay in the higher and lower wage groups of railwaymen were expressed in a statement issued by the executive council of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, which has just completed its sitting in Wellington.
"When we prepared our case we fully expected the lower-paid men would receive the same treatment as those in the higher grades, and our wages claim was based accordingly," said the statement. "This principle has quite obviously not been carried out. On the contrary, the increases granted to the higher-paid men are out of all proportion to those allowed the lower wage groups of the A.S.R.S.
"It was further stressed by our society, and recognised by the tribunal', that the peculiar nature of railwayman's, work placed them in a higher wage category than other sections of {he community. This point, also, has apparently been overlooked, because if the tribunal's findings are to be a guide to general wage adjustments throughout the country, as has been indicated, the effect will be to nullify any advantage which otherwise might have been gained by the lower-paid rail-way-men."
