MUST ACT NOW

AUSTRALIA AND U.S.

Attracting Trade, Immigrants

And Capital

N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 10 a.m. SYDNEY, this day. Australia must act now if she wants to attract trade, tourist traffic, immigrants and capital from the United States, said Mr. P. C. Spender, M.P., a member of the Australian War Council, who has just returned from a tour of America. Mr. Spender urged a drastic overhaul of Australia's expanding publicity service in the United States. "Greater and lasting American friendship is of vital importance to this country if Australia is to. figure appreciably in the post-war world," declared Mr. Spender. Among new publicity methods which Mr. Spender advocated were: Talks by Australian fighting men and women to key groups in the United States; exchange trips between Australian and American workers; wide circulation of suitable Australian documentary films; a travelling library of Australian books for distribution through the 'school systems. Included in the publicity methods which Mr. Spender described as useless was the .sending of mimeographed statements about Australia to various newspapers and magazines. "These," he commented, "have only one repository—the waste paper basket."
