AWARD TO ENGINEER
UEADERSHIP AND COURAGE WHANGAREI, Friday. The citation accompanying the i award of Lloyds Medal to Second-Engineer-Officer Austin Conway Reynolds, of Whangarei, has now been received' in Whangarei. The award was made some months ago, but the exploit" which gained the award was not known. The citation states that SecondEngineer Reynolds' ship was. torpedoed while sailing alone and 'although evasive action was taken a second torpedo struck her and she began to sink. The crew then took to the boats, and a third torpedo struck the vessel, which blew up and sank. Second-Engineer Rey- .. nolds stayed in the engine-room ■until the end, and his leadership, courage, devotion to duty in excep- .. tionally dangerous and . difficult circumstances set a fine example to the rest of the engine-room staff. Mr. Reynolds, who is the son of Mr. W. Reynolds, of Whangarei, was also -awarded the M.B.E. in recognition of his service.
