NO ORDER MADE
COUPLE IN A GARAGE CASE OP EX-SERVICEMAN An assurance that the returned soldier referred to in last night's Star living in a garage in Mount Eden would not have to vacate the premises until he had found suitable accommodation elsewhere was given to-day by the Mayor of Mount Eden, Mr. R. J. Mills. "I wiil no: be a party to any man being put out on to the street, more especially a returned soldier," said Mr. Mills, who pointed out that any order to vacate premises would be issued by the council after considering the facts, and not by an official on his own authority. It was explained by Mr. Mills that a building inspector visited the property in response to a complaint by a ratepayer living in the vicinity, but that no order to vacate was made, as such an order was always given in writing. There had been a breach bf the Mount Eden borough by-laws in that the garage was converted into living quarters without the necessary permit. The building inspector had also informed him, said Mr. Mills, that the garage had only approximately half the light and ventilation" required by the by-laws and health regulations. In the report published yesterday it was explained that the soldier had been compelled to live in the garage because of the fact that he had not been able to secure possession of any of the four houses owned by his father-in-law, or to build a house owing to his inability' to secure sufficient capital.
