POSTAL RECORD
AUCKLAND TRAFFIC
GREAT VOLUME OF PARCELS
Postal traffic in Auckland during last week's Christmas rush established a record, exceeding the figures for the corresponding week of last year by a considerable margin. The mails were swelled by heavy arrivals of Christmas parcels, gifts and cards from overseas.
It was reported to-day that the number of mail bags dispatched from Auckland for the week was 6781, compared with 4996 for the preChristmas week last December, while the number of bags received for the week was 6482, as against 5279 a year ago. The number of bags of parcels dispatched was 6876, compared with 4423 in the corresponding week of 1943, and the number received totalled 4622, as against 3720. The number of parcels delivered around the city and suburbs by parcel post services reached 25,524 last week, being a large increase on the total of 18,923 for the corresponding week of 1943. Although the comparison is affected to some extent by the fact that Saturday was Christmas Day in the 1943 week covered by the figures, it is stated that the increase is so marked as to show a clear margin even if an adjustment were made to allow for this difference. The postal authorities expressed satisfaction to-day with the way the traffic had been handled by the augmented staffs. To-day mail traffic was stated to be falling back to normal., but there was a large overseas inail from Australia and the Middle East which kept the staff fairly busy.
