HAILSTORM DAMAGE

METHVEN AREA INSPECTED CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The executive of the Methven branch of the Farmers' Union has made an inspection of the damage done by the recent hailstorm. The conclusion arrived at was that there was complete and widespread damage to the best producing areas in the Methven district. So far as wheat was concerned, it said, the damage may not possibly be as great as at first estimated, but there was complete destruction of peas, oats, ryegrass and other small seed. On six farms the wheat was a complete loss, on 12 there was a 50 per cent loss, and on a larger number the loss was 18 per cent or less. Much would depend on conditions prevailing in, say, ten days' time.
