AUCKLAND CUP

LANDVEYOR NEXT

AL-SIRAT'S STAKES

; The 25-to-one chance, Foxwyn, ;narrowly beaten in the Great North; iern Derby last year, came from the ', clouds," as it were, in the straight to win the Auckland Cup of 1944 from Landveyor, just when it -appeared that the issue was a foregone conclusion. Foxwyn was not in thecall in the early stages; not in the. call with half a mile to go, but after that the Foxbridge gelding never put a foot wrong, and came like a train to .put his sire on deck to win his first- Auckland Cup. It was a fine performance,, .and the lightweight told against Landveyor's perhaps just as meritor-ious'. effort. Te Hinemoa, the favourite, ran excellently, as she .was always well placed, and even at the home turn appeared a possibility, although at that stage Lanaveyor was going strongly i$ front, but once inside the distance, where Foxwyn came through on the rails, she found that she could not go on, and was only a poor third. When the barrier was released Tara King and Battledress were momentarily in front, but they had not gone far before Water Vixen took up the role of pacemaker, and she led through the straight eight lengths ■ clear b'f Landveyor, with two to Tara' King, a length to Jeff and Te Hinemoa, and Mr. Rosa, Sir Dink and; Merry May not so far away.. Entering the back stretch Water Vixen drew .out at least 15 lengths ahead of Landveyor, Jeff and Te Hinemoa being three' lengths further back, and then in close order came Tara King, L6rd Chancellor, Abbey Fox, and Lou Rosa. Water Vixen commenced to shorten her strides and Landveyor took her measure three furlongs from home to lead across the top and into the straight from Te Hinemoa. Foxwyn Jeff and Water Vixen. ' ' Most prominent of the others at that stage were Lou Rosa and Battledress. Landveyor was two lengths clear just inside the distance, where U B. Goulsbro brought Foxwyn through on the fence, and the four-year-old went on to win like a true stayer by a long neck. Te Hinemoa was third, two and a half lengths' away and then canfe Battledress, Tara King,- Lou Rosa, Jeff, Foxsen and Merry May. ■ .. ...■-.■ In OTlirccr Divisions .

tiJ blnson Handicap was run in three divisions, and' Nepeta. which has been a long time, making good desnitl consistent .efforts, had rather a comfortable win in the first division. He was en i!£ to t he leaa earlv bv Cameron and, although challenged strongly inthfe •°, me stretch - by Tavernside was not ridden out to win. From a great stS?t by Mr. Skipwith, Tavenside le# out from ?o, C ,rf heU A, N fJ? Chun £ Chon S ancTFer?- £? ♦" e At S? *>alf-mile Nepeta was in f r°nt from Richelieu. Fencourt. Tavern--522' i^A 1 ?" 1 £ tar and Chung Chong. There was little change into the straight, and Nepeta had the issue insafVkeeping halfway down the running, Tavernside beating Chung Chong for second. Then came Corporal, Ninth Star and Chatmoney. ; Laddie Boy had an. extremely, easy win in the second division, in which 1 Prince Revel, which had been unruly at the start, for a considerable time was hopelessly left. Laddie Boy dashed into the lead at the end of the first quarter from Desert Victory and Golden Pay, with Fine Km and Good Fun handy. Laddie Boy had four lengths' advantage as he swung round the home turn and he was'on the bit as he coasted past the judge lengths ahead of Desert Victory, with Fine Kin, Good Fun and .Rampant, the next to finish. , ; The third, division resulted in a very keen struggle between Yours arid Mine, Mercurial; and Bramble Song, the three horses going over the line with heads between them. Miss Cambria was first to show out from Seafire, Broieform, Bramble Song and Te Kiwi, but Broieform and Miss Cambria soon got to the front to lead Tough Guy, Te Kiwi, and Brmble Song into the top stretch. : Seafire then joined the leading bunch approaching the straight and there was little or nothing between Broieform, Miss Cambria, Seafire and Te Kiwi as they came into line. At the distance Yours and Mine came fast to join issue with Bramble Song, which made a fast forward move, and Mercurial also, joined, in, .Te Kiwi losing ground. It was anybody's race from then on, with the -honours to Yours and Mine, Gaelic Salute finished strongly into fourth place, followed by Te Kiwi, Lagenia and Foxrose. - Versatile Expellant . -Just to ■ show his versatility and also to record his third, win in succession, Exrj'eUant, winner of the open sprint at Waipa only the other day after succeeding -in a hurdle race at Te Rapa a couple of weeks earlier, .led practically all the way to win the "Graf ton Hurdles in good style from Royal Jay. He was less than avfive to'two favourite, and although'the margin in his favour at the finish was only-half *ai length he was not ridden out. It was a very stylish performance, particularly as Expellant is getting on in years and had been kept up to the collar early in his career. The race was not without incident, Watchett's jockey losing an iron while racing prominently in the early stages, Sir Fox falling when handy to the leaders at the second to last fence, and Whetawhenua crashing at the final obstacle, but despite these somewhat exciting incidents it is doubtful if they made any difference to the result. Expellant and Quination were the first to show out from Watchett, Sir Fox and Lucky Alex, and that was the order as the field went past, the stand, with Gold Spot, Whetuwhenua and Bronze Night handy. Sir Fox went fast along the back to head Expellant, but that was only for a moment or two, because Expellant was again in front at the iive furlong post, from Lucky Alex, Gold Spot and Sir Fox. Gold Spot then made a bad jump and faded - out, ' Expellant leading into the straight, from Lucky Alex, Whetuwhenua, Royal Jay and The Dude. Royal Jay challenged Expellant strongly in the run home, but was not good enough, The Dude being a moderate third, just clear of Lucky Alex, which, should be improved by the race. Taihuia was next, and th.ea.Gold Spot. and. Good. Armour. >. ; .. „ Al-Sirat Easily It seems as though New Zealand has discovered, another* outstanding .tworyeardld, for Al-Sirat, which was unknown -to northern, racegoers except by .name as the winner of a two-year-old race at, Wellington and a classic at Riccarton, simply played with the opposition over the concluding stages of the Great Northern Foal Stakes this afternoon. The manner m which he won this race emphasised what his southern admirers claimed him to oe, the best juvenile seen out for some time, because the field opposed to him to-day was claimed to be good, but once Wiggins asked Al-Sirat a question below the distance he came away to win just as his rider desired. The minor boom Auckland horse, Balmore, was actually the first to become prominent from a good start, but he had very little advantage over Al-Sirat, Majestic, Essay, and Black Ace. At the half mile Essay went fast and so did Balmacara, and these two were followed past the three by; Majestic, Black Ace, Al-Sirat (with Wiggins sitting still), Balmore, and Frontier Mac. Essay swung round into the home stretch just ahead of Balmacara, Black Ace and Al-Sirat, which were on terms, but Wiggins brought Al-Sirat through, flicked the colt with the whip, and put his name on the Great Northern Foal Stakes record for 1944. Al-Sirat only won by a length from Balmacara, but what a length! Kerry Lad ran past beaten horses in the straight as it were, and was followed by Essay, Black Ace and Balmore.
