General Mac Arthur has announced in a communique from his Headquarters in the Philippines, that the Leyte-Samar campaign has been closed with the capture of the last enemy stronghold, the port of Palompon, which fell to : the troops of the 77th'Division. Nothing.'but mop-ping-up remains to be done bri'lieyte. The Japanese have , suffered 113,221 casualties. They have- lost;-;-;274S planes-in'"the:Philippines- in thg-past two : months.. 'American- ; - casualties were 11,217, of which 2600 were killed. General Yamashita, the Japanese Commander-in-Chief, has sustained perhaps the greatest defeat w Japanese history.
