ARMY HUTMENTS
« HOUSING OLD MEN SUGGESTION TO MR. FRASER The suggestion that Army hutments be made available to the Salvation Army's industrial home to ; cope with the large numbers of elderly men requiring accommoda-1 i tion there, has been made to the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, by the Mayor, Mr. Allum, following repre- I j sentations from the Salvation Army i authorities. . | In a letter to Mr. Allum the army ! stated it was greatly concerned regarding the increased demand, especially by elderly men, for accomi modation at its home. At present the institution was over-tax,ed to the extent of 17 men and in the current I i week applications had been refused from the Hospital Board, the Police i Department and other sources. "I feel something ought to be done . as a temporary measure in order to ! : relieve this very difficult situation," i stated Adjutant R. Maddison, on behalf of the Salvation Army. He proposed that Mr. Allum approach the Prime Minister regarding the 1 loan of 10 Army hutments to be erected in the grounds of the institution to provide temporary shelter for the cases concerned. Mr. Allum said he had written to the Prime Minister along the lines ; suggested and had stated that he was : writing direct because he had been unable to- find any local authority I dealing with the disposal of un- j j occupied Army hutments on park j ' lands in and around Auckland. j j ===== I
