"FREE" MEDICINE
It was surprising to read Mr. Brian Knight's remarks in respect to sickness being both fashionable and free. In the first place it is not free, but paid for directly from the people, and in nearly every case in addition to an extra fee imposed by the doctor. The majority of people feel that they pay highly for what the doctors admit themselves to be an inefficient and insufficient service. This talk of free medical treatment is too much indulged in by people who must .know it to be untrue. Doctors' incomes prove this. One visit as a patient to the casualty ward or X-ray department of the Auckland Hospital should be sufficient to convince Mr. Knight that being ill is not a fashionable affair. To the average person it is a severe ordeal seeking advice and treatment under present-day conditions. His remarks are a slur on people suffering ill-health and pain and must fur? ther increase their hesitation in seeking medical attention that they are entitled to and pay for. B.L.
