ON 'CHANGE WILSONS CEMENT FIRMER Wilsons Cement shares, which had weakened, recently, were firmer on the Auckland Stock Exchange to-day at 18/. Buyers returned for a number of bank shares at reduced limits, and offers for Bank of New Zealand shares were lowered to £2 5/. Insurances were again strong, the only seller for New Zealands quoting £4 10/ against offers at the last sale price, £4 7/6. Victory Loan, 2h per cent stock, maturing in 1949-50, was slightly easier at £06 7/6. AUSTRALIAN DEBT INCREASE OVER FIVE I'EARS Total internal public debt of Australia, funded and short term, rose by £1,087.2 million- to £1,790.9 million in the five years ended June 30 Funded, debt increased from £643.5 million to £1350.3 million and short-term debt from £50.2 million to £440.6 million. War finance is reflected in the heavy increase in the Commonwealth debt. The funded debt has Jumped by £673.1 million to £891.6 million, and short-term debt of £407.5 million has been wholly Incurred in the last four years. The Commonwealth annual interest bill has risen from £8.3 million to £33.9 million. Th&t of the States has declined slightly from £17.2 million to £16.6 million.
