LOANS TO SERVICEMEN

Recently the Minister of Rehabilitation stated that the sum total of loans to ex-servicemen to dote amounted to £4,477,653. A £1500 building loan to an ex-serviceman repayable over a period of 25 years amounts in weekly payments of 29/9 to £1925, excluding rates and insurance. On this transaction the Government shows a profit of £425. On this basis it is feasible to suppose that on the aggregate loan of £4,447,653 the Government should, over a period of 25 years, make a profit approximating £1,889,000. R. H. McLEOD.
