SURPRISE ATTACK
N.Z. CORSAIR PILOTS SUCCESSES IN THE PACIFIC (R.N.Z.A.F. Official News Service) BOUGAINVILLE, November 29. Caught in, a surprise attack by four New Zealand Corsair fighterbombers, six large Japanese barges were destroyed in Keravia Bay, near Rabaul. A motor launch was also wrecked and stores damaged. Enemy personnel were unloading the barges when the Corsair pilots pounced on them. Some escaped, but others were killed by the stream of lead from the New Zealanders' machineguns, and supplies and stores already unloaded from the barges and stacked on the beach were set oh fire. The flight was led by Pilot-Officer E. D- McCabe, of Wellington, who had with him Flight-Sergeants I. W. B. Tyerman, of Gisborne, T. A. Stephenson, of Napier, and H. J. Corbett, of Ashburton. The raid was over in a few minutes, the New Zealanders sweeping in and out of the bay before the enemy had time to recover from his surprise. The barges were blazing furiously when the Corsairs left for home and black smoke was rising high above the stores on the beach.
