NO WORK FOR AN HOUR
RAILWAY WAITRESSES SHORT STAFFING COMPLAINT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Waitresses at the Wellington railway station refreshment rooms ceased work for an hour at noon to-day and paid a call on the district manpower office with complaints of short staffing at the refreshment room. Between noon and one o'clock all service in the dining room at the station ceased, although the cafeteria was still in operation. The complaint was that the shortage of staff was making the conditions of employment extremely difficult, and the waitresses asked a manpower official who interviewed them for some relief by the provision of extra staff. They were promised that the authorities would investigate the position.
An official of the refreshment room stated this afternoon that sickness and absenteeism among certain members of the staff was the main cause of the shortage. The girls had returned to work at one o'clock, and it was not anticipated that there would be any further difficulty.
