MALE OR FEMALE CLERKS
It is most remarkable to read ot the discussion at the meeting of the Chamber of Commence regarding employment of returned soldiers as clerks. Employers do not want to replace their female clerks. After all these girls have only been carrying on the work whilst the boys have been keeping this country free for employer and girls to live a most sheltered and care-free life. Girls, maybe, are cheaper and give a brighter atmosphere about the. office, but it is the duty of every employer, if he -be loyal to his pledge, to replace girls with suitable returned men. It is certainly not right for girls to be placed into an uncongenial job; but surely this can be got over. The remark, "There does not seem to be any practical way out without making trouble in one way or another," to me is a gross insult to the men who have made sucn sacrifices, and I feel sure that any decent young woman would give up the position that she filled "whilst the boys were away" for a suitable returned man. We have heard so frequently that "Nothing is too good for them," and yet they are getting \it, "nothing." GRATEFUL CITIZEN.
