CHARGE FOR PRAMS
CARRIAGE ON MOTOR BUSES AUCKLAND-PENKOSE ROUTE Application by W. J. Wheeler and Sons, Ltd., to charge 6d for carrying a pushchair and 1/ for a pram on any single journey on the AucklandPenrose route was made before the Metropolitan Licensing Authority this morning. A representative of the firm stated that for many years the company had made no charge, but with the population of the area increasing, the buses were now carrying sometimes 14 or 15 pushchairs, and as a result of the time involved, especially where these were taken on one section trips, in the driver placing these chairs in the luggage compartment and unloading them, the timetable was being disorganised. Several members expressed the view that the proposed charge seemed high. ' The company also sought permission to charge 9d for carrying parcels under 141b in weight, and 1/3 for parcels over 141b, provided that it should not be obligatory on the licensee to carry parcels weighing more than 281b. It was explained that the company's buses carried small packages for isolated shops on the City-Penrose route. After discussion in committee, the authority declined permission to make a charge for carrying pushchairs, but granted permission to make a charge of 6d for prams, and to charge for parcels as requested.
