JAPANESE COMMANDS

Tokyo Announces Leaders In The Philippines YAMASHITA IN CHARGE Rec. 11 a.m. NEW YORK, Nov. 8. The Japanese War Office, according to Tokyo radio, announced that General Tomoyuki Yamashita has been appointed commander of the Japanese forces in the Philippines. The United Press says that Yamashita, who conquered Singapore and completed the Philippines campaign with a ruthlessness that won him the name of "butcher of Batan," has recently been commander of the Japanese forces in Malaya. The United Press adds that the appointment apparently means that Yamashita succeeds General Rhigenori Kuroda as commander in the Philippines, but Field-Marshal Huichi Terauchi, whom General Mac Arthur gave as his opponent, is believed to remain as commander of the Japanese forces in the southern regions.

The radio also announced that Admiral Denshichi Okuchi has been appointed commander of naval forces, Vice-Admirals Shigeu Fukutome and Takijiro Onishi, joint commanders of the naval air units, and LieutenantGeneral Yasuji Tominago, Air Force commander. All appointments are in the Philippines.
