GENERAL'S TRANSFER

TO MEDITERRANEAN THEATRE

Rec. 11.30 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 23. Lieutenant-General Joseph McNarney has arrived from Washington and taken up the duties of Deputy Supreme Commander of Allied forces in the Mediterranean theatre, and commanding general for the United States Army in the North African theatre, reports Reuters correspondent at Mediterranean Headquarters. The Supreme Commander in the Mediterranean is General Sir Henry Maitland Wilson.

The North African theatre of the United States Army will be included in the Mediterranean theatre from November 1.

General McNarney, formerly deputy Chief of Staff of the United States Army, succeeds LieutenantGeneral Devers, who is now commanding the Sixth Army Group in France.
