Volo Senwod Outstays The Southern Pacers

ENHANCES REPUTATION

WINNING DOUBLE IS COMPLETED WHEN F. J. SMITH GETS HILDA POTTS HOME COMFORTABLY IN LAST RACE: ROBIE TAKES BIG TROT IN HANDS OF J. T. PAUL

An impressive performance by Volo Senwod, one of Auckland's young pacers, with a string of victories to his credit during the past 12 months, carried him to success in the Victory Handicap at the spring meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club at Epsom to-day. It was indeed a fine performance, one which indicates that this son of Lusty Volo will ultimately enter the highest company. He was in a good position in the early stages of the race, never covering an inch of extra ground, and after trailing the leaders to the final three-furlong pole, he went to the front to win on a tight reign from Black Label, which finished fast after being a long way back in the first mile. Golden River, which had been prominent throughout, was a poor third. The West Coast horses Karangi and Bulldozer formed the favourite bracket to win, and Karangi led for a mile and three furlongs, when he broke and lost position. His stablemate, Bulldozer, then made a forward dash, but he appeared to have had enough when the top stretch was entered, for he failed to run on when called upon, ultimately finishing fourth.

Favourites Placed Casabianca was solidly backed to win the Waitemata Handicap, and would have won if he - had trotted solidly throughout. He broke shortly after the start, again during the running, and although he finished fairly fast into third place was actually galloping at the post. However, punters were pretty well on the mark otherwise, because the second favourite, Fighting Friend, led practically all the way, and. although headed on more than one occasion trotted faultlessly to win in good style, even though the margin in his favour was a short one. At barrier release Mae Wynne failed to strike a gait and Casabianca broke just afterwards, Otawa Lass following suit at the end of half a mile. At this stage Fighting Friend and King. Parrish were leading from Strummer, four lengths ahead of Rara Avis, with another three to Little Hero. Passing the stand at the commencement of the final lap, Fighting Friend was just in front of King Parrish, closely followed by a buncl* comprised of Strummer, Rara Avis, Casabianca and Little Hero. Rara Avis, was a half length in front of Fighting Friend at the three-furlong pole, where Sure Lady moved through to join Strummer in third place. Fighting Friend was the first to turn for home and in the run down the straight Sure Lady issued a strong challenge on the rail" as Casabianca and Strummer joined issue wider out. It was a ding-dong finish with the honours to Fighting Friend by a neck from Sure Lady, with a head to Casabianca and another to Strummer. Rara Avis was a handy fifth, ana then came Redmond's Pride and Otawa Lass.

Another Exciting Finish The October Handicap also produced a spectacular finish, in that at least half a dozen horses possessed winning prospects as the straightened up in the home stretch. Even half-way down the running there was nothing between them, but then Albert Tracey drew out to win by a length and a half from Brass Buttons, with True Jewel a close third, just slightly in front of Athlone Direct. Honest Peter, a well-backed Southern horse, failed to strike his hopples, and was a bad last when the field got under way. Flashlight had then gone out in front of Repose, with Sonny Jewel, Kewpie s PriQ e and Sumana .prominent among tne others. Flashlight was setting a solid pace commencing the nan, where True Jewel, Albert Tracey, Toushay and Desert Lad commenced to. move through. There was a solid bunch crossing the top, and as they turned for home there was nothing between Flashlight, True Jewel, .Albert Tracey, Brass Buttons and Athlone Direct, while Desert Lad, which had been forced to cover extra ground, was trying to get a run through. Albert Tracey then forged ahead, and after the placed horses came Athlone Direct, Desert Lad, Our Gail and Mihini Tere.

Tory Handicap, this quartet being trailed by Golden River, True Guide, Royal King and Safety Pin. At the end of a mile, in 2.23, Karangi was still in front of True Guide, with Stuart Lee handy, Golden River and Volo Senwod close up, while Safety Pin and Black Label followed, Loyal King then being last. Once the field entered the final stretch Golden River momentarily showed in front, but Volo Senwod drew out after that, Stuart Lee also joining in as Bulldozer made up leeway to be in a handy position. Volo Senwod was well- clear breaking through the top and was never really troubled, Black Label providing a little excitement for spectators by finishing strongly down the last furlong. Golden River was four lengths behind Black Label for third place, and then came True Guide, the others pulling up.

Robie's Win Not Surprising , The old master, J. T. Paul, showed that he has lost none of his dash with a straight out trotter when he produced Robia to win the Mountain Handicap, but he did not take many followers of the sport by surprise, they having expected "J.T." to work improvement in the son of Robert Earl. For that reason, Robie was sent out second favourite at little better than three-to-one and he never gave his admirers any cause for uneasiness, always trotting soundly in a forward position until Paul took him into command soon after leaving the half-mile. Robie did the rest, although he was called upon to withstand a determined challenge by Cockney, which ran on solidly down the straight, but had had enough a little short of the post. The favourite for the race was Forewarned, but pleasing trotter though she is, her stamina leaves something to be desired, for after being well up with the leaders for most of the journey she weakened badly in the last quarter-mile, and was only fifth at the post. Forewarned was in the lead passing the stand the first time just a shade in front of Steel King and Great Surprise, with Robie, Echoist, Cockney and Paul Parrish within easy range. With a round to so the order was the same, but Robiet got to the front opposite the stand, where Forewarned and Steel Kins were on terms, with Cockney and Echoist hard on their heels. Robie got to the front opposite the straight entrance, and although Cockney came m gallant style, he had no real chance. The third horse was Echoist, from Paul Parrish, with a big gap to Forewarned, which like the others, had been eased to a walk approaching the post.

Smart Performance The hot favourite Lady Moness was responsible for a smart performance to win the Parriell Handicap. She was a long way back in the early stages, Max Stewart was driving her confidently, and when F. J. Smith took Medical Student into the lead at the three-furlong pole Stewart immediately brought the Jack Potts mare along. The pair then drew out to be three lengths clear on the turn, with Smith showing some anxiety, and once in line Lady Moness ran on strongly, Medical Student weakened, and Communique came rapidly into the picture. However, the could do no better and Lady Moness got the verdict in good style. Free Bond was slow in the early stages, Goodall meanwhile taking up the pacemaking with Diamond Trusty followed by Trikkala, Medical Student, Communique, David Derby, Modern Jewel, Play Safe and Lady Moness. The order was much the same with a round to go, where Medical Student, which was having the run of the race, was in third place behind Diamond Trust and Trikkala. Two lengths further back were Modern Jewel and David Derby, with Kewpie's Crown and Lady Moness following. The speed was clappcd on as the field left the half mile, and when Medical Student went up on the outside of Diamond Trust approaching the three, Stewart brought Lady Moness along with a fine run on the outside, being followed through by Communique. Once in line for the judge the honours went to the almost even money favourite, with Communique and Medical Student _ following. Play Safe, which met with a bit of bad luck in the running, was a close fourth and may be in the money on Mondav, while Bill Scott did well to finish "fifth, ahead of Dunkirk.

Karangi Sets Pace Safety Pin was slow away, and Karangi, going out fast, led Stuart Lee, Yolo Senwod and April Direct over the first half mile in the Vic-

Sea Born in Good Form Jack High was backed to odds-on to win the Stewart Handicap, and he had every chance from the angle that he began smartly to take tne lead and make his own pace—but no chance with Sea Born when it came to the run home. The latter, which came with a good reputation from the South Island, met with a baa check early in the race, but nevertheless had the thick end of the purse in safe keeping a long wa y From the judge. He is pretty good Great Waitaki and Jack High were the first to become prominent fi om Jewel's Eyre and Sea Born, and Jack High was going veryeQmfortaby in front commencing the last halt or the iourney, at which stage Jewel s Eyre and Waiwera Jewel were closely trailing him ahead of Syncopate, Charles Rex, Poppotunoa, and Sea Born. Freeman Holmes, despairing of getting a run on the fence Fn the back stretch pulled his horse to the outside, and Sea Born quickly joined Jack High and then came to easy victory. Poppotunoa ran past Jack High to take second P la ce, while Jewel's Eyre was fourth, attended by Sir Volo. Other members of the field, being hopelessly out of the contest, were eased up. Touch and Go A brilliant finishing run by the each-way favourite, Rita Grattan, just touched off Heydey on the post in the Epsom Handicap. Heydey got into the lead in the home stretch and just when he appeared to certain to win the hard-driven Rita Grattan caught him on the post to win by the proverbial nose. It was an interesting race throughout, and after Aranui Jack broke ; the start to soon be relegated to the tail of the field, his stablemate Bonny Volo set out to make the running from Kewpie's Pride, t H^ ey ' T,arl Bill Ova. Desert Lad, bunny. Jewel and Rita Grattan. horses were racing in close formation an there was not much change in the order when they commenced the last lap. Passing the half-mile Auto Lad ioined Bonny Volo in front, Heydey still going nicely in third position, and Rita Grattan improving hei status. Auto Lad was in f ron t and loin* strongly as they entered.the Kl stretcn, but Desert.Lad joined him and the pair led at tne two from Heydey, with a coupleof lpneths to Rita Grattan. Auto Laa was vmder pressure once in the home

run and soon afterwards Heydey took charge, only to fail in the last striae. Athlone Direct was a moderate third, with Auto Lad close up, followed by Characteristic, Aranui Jack and -Hill Ova.

Favourite Takes Double The Electric Handicap provided an interesting two-horse race, the favourite, Hilda Potts, winning after a fine struggle with the southerner, Clairemorris, and giving the lakanini trainer, F. J- Smith, the winning double, he having earlier in the day won the principal race with Volo Senwod. There was a big field in the Electric Handicap and the race was interesting, several horses being bunched until two furlongs from home when Hilda Potts and Clairemorris, which had been nicely placed behind Shadow Son and Bay Machine' cleared right out from -their Opponents. They came into the straight together, but in the run home Hilda Potts always had the edge on Clairemorris, the formei winning by half a length. Hillcrest was eight lengths away, third, and was followed by Betty Boop, True Guide and Bay Machine.
