SOLD LOTTERY TICKETS
STATIONER FIXED £22
In answer to summons charges of selling tickets in a lottdt-y on September 22 and 29, Arthur Alfred Newbery came before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Police Court. He pleaded guilty.
Detective-Sergeant Trethewey said defendant had a stationer's shop and lending library and had been selling tickets in a lottery in which prizes were awarded according to the totalisator returns at race meetings. The tickets were sold at 6d each, and in one case a first prize of £50 was given and in the other £7 was the first prize. He would not disclose the name of the person for whom he was selling the tickets. Last year Newbery had been fined £30 for using premises as a common gaming house. On one charge Newbery was fined £15 and on the othe." £7. '
