BEST SHORT STORY
There were fewer entries for the September story contest than there have been for a long time, and except for three of them the standard was not high. The first prize of 5/ goes to Bernice Moore, Royal Oak (13), a young writer whose steady improvement we have been pleased to watch. Her story, "Tale of Two Horses," is fresh and charming, with a "different" quality about it which we like. Bernice should, however, learn to be more accurate with her spelling. "Storm in an Inkwell," by Brian L. Fisher, Otahuhu (15) was a rather "grown up" effort, but definitely clever and humorous, and he will be awarded four points. Also a four-point £tory was "The Rainbow Fairy," by Joy Preston, Parnell (15). The October contest is now open to all boys and girls under 18, and the writer of the best story received by the end of the month will win a prize of 5/. The contest closes on October 31. Write on one side of the paper only; do not go beyond 600 words (this is most important), state your name, age and address, and post to Peter Pan, C/o. Star Office, Box 1409, Auckland. Remember, all work must be entirely your own, not something you have heard or been told and then written, down from memory. The "idea" may come from anywhere, of course, but the working-out must be entirely your own.
