HOSPITAL ON DOMAIN
CITY COUNCIL'S CONCERN A decision to make urgent representations to the Government to settle the question of the future of the servicemen's hospital in the Domain was made on the recommendation of the Mayor, Mr. Allum, at last night's meeting of the City Council. The town clerk, Mr. T. W. M. Ashby, reported that 110 finality had been reached on the question of legislation to validate the erection of the hospital. The Auckland Hospital Board had stated in 1940 that, if the request to the council to make the site available during the war was acceded to, the Health Department would erect temporary buildings which could be readily removed when no longer required. Efforts by the council to limit the period after the war to five years were viewed unfavourably by the Government, and nothing had transpired from proposals to hold conferences on the matter.
The chairman of the parks committee, Mr. J. L. Coakley, said he would never consent to making a compromise.
"A shocking breach of faith," was the comment of Miss E. Melville.
