JUNIOR TENNIS

THE N.Z. TITLES

PRIOR CLAIM OF AUCKLAND

"That because the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association is the only 'live' tennis organisation in the Dominion it should be allotted the New Zealand junior championships this'season, is absolutely ridiculous," declared Mr. S. Cleal, president of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, to-day, in commenting on a statement from Christchurch published on Monday. 'If this claim was made as stated," added Mr. Cleal, "I am certain it did not represent the opinion of the executive of the Canterbury Association. Auckland is easily the largest and most active association in New Zealand, and because of its activities of recent times, the tennis clubs of New Zealand, including those of Canterbury, have been able to carry on. This fact has been acknowledged and appreciated by the Canterbury Association. Tennis balls have been manufactured by labour procured through the efforts of the Auckland Association and financed by the Auckland tennis clubs to the extent of £57. "Auckland last year was able to hold five tournaments, which included two junior championships and a secondary schools' tournament. Auckland has, without a doubt, prior claim to the New Zealand junior championships this year, as they were held in Canterbury in 1941, the last occasion upon-which they.were played. Auckland was allotted the championships in 1942, but at the last moment, after all arrangements had been made and expenses incurred, they had to be cancelled owing to travel restrictions. It is a pity that irresponsible delegates should make such statements, to which publicity has been given, without a proper knowledge of the true facts. Auckland has fully maintained progress during the difficult war period and has especially concentrated on junior tennis. The coming season's programme will be the largest since 1939, and appears to be the forerunner of a "bumper season in 1945, when we hope to stage the New Zealand senior championships, as it is Auckland's turn to be allotted this tournament." •
