J. Mayson Plays Well To Defeat A. N. Young
There was some element of surprise in the defeat by J. Mayson of A.-N. Young in the first round of the senior victory championship at Titirangi last Saturday. Mayson, formerly a Maungakiekie member, is playing his first season at Titirangi after his release from the forces and produced probably his best round there to eliminate Young. He was putting particularly well and was round in approximately 77, a very satisfying round for a player on a five mark. J. H. Young, who had qualified top with his brother, produced a sterling second half, after a shaky first nine in which he duffed three drives. His opponent was G. Lawson, who took the two opening holes with fours, but put his second shot at the third out of bounds. Lawson was one down at the turn after missing a chance with three putts on the ninth green. Young was in his best form coming home, and with two fours to finish, after winand 2, tallied 36. ""R. G. Tappenden struck form against A. Taylor in the first round and incurred a reduction in his handicap from 11 to 10. In the second round he was eliminated by B T. Laycock, who played soundly to take both his games with 5 and 4 margins. The other competitor to reach the semi-finals was C. J. Bunting, whose play was consistent with his form of late.
