BRIDGE SHIFTED

ARMY WEEK DISPLAY

The Bailev bridge which was erected outside the C.P.O. at the beginning of "Army Week' was shifted bodily about 30 feet further down Queen Street this morning, the demonstration representing the "launching" of the bridge across a stream. . . „ The first operation in preparing for the launching was completed when the ends of the bridge were jacked up and placed on heavy steel rollers. Next, a "launching nose was built on to one end of the bridge, this consisting of a series of steel framework sections bolted together and extending backwards for about 30 or 40 feet. Its purpose was to balance the end of the bridge while the structure was rolled across the "stream." After the nose had been built —it was completed in about an hour—the whole structure was moved bv manpower until one end of the bridge was level with the northern end of the post office. Later a ramp was built, and tanks again rolled over the bridge to demonstrate, its. strength.

To-morrow's Bisplaj's Signal equipment will be displayed in trucks stationed at three points in Queen Street from 12.15 to 1.45 to-morrow afternoon. Operational radio sets used in General- Grant and General Sherman tanks will be open for public use in the trucks, and all radio sets in use by the Second Division will be on display. A novel feature will be portable radio telephone sets carried by school cadets. Citizens may use these sets to communicate with the army signal trucks and order bonds.
