BUTCHER FINED

In the Magistrate's Court at Onehunga, before Mr. F. H Levien S.M., Albert Edward Sothern a butcher, pleaded guilty to a breach of the Food and Drugs Act in respect of sausages in which the amount of preservative used was in excess of that allowed by the Act. A Health Department inspector took samples from defendant's shop which on examination proved to contain 6.9 per cent of sulphur dioxide preservative, the regulation allowing only 3.5 per cent. The magistrate said it was "an attempt to extend the life of the sausages" and imposed a fine of £5 and costs 23/6.
