AWARUA BY-ELECTION
NATIONAL PARTY CANDIDATE (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, this day. Mr. G. R. Herron, of Makarewa, was yesterday afternoon selected by a committee of the National party to contest the Awarua seat byelection rendered necessary by the death of Brigadier Hargest on active service.
Born at Pukerau 56 years ago, Mr. Herron has been identified for many years with both the producing and marketing aspects of the dairy industry. He was president of the Herd Testing Group in Southland for 15 years and for four years he was president of the Dominion Herd Testing Association. As organiser for the Southland provincial executive of the .Farmers' Union for three years Mr. Herron achieved considerable success. For 17 years he was an assessor on the Conciliation Council, representing all cheese factory suppliers in the South Island. »
