TUBERCULOSIS VICTIMS
GRANTS TO HOSPITAL NURSES The question of grants to nurses who undergo sanatorium treatment after contracting pulmonary tuberculosis while engaged on nursing duties was considered by the Auckland Hospital Board last night A letter from the Director-General of Health, Dr. M. H. Watt, suggested that uniformity was desirable and that the amount should be fixed at £1 per week in addition to Social Security benefits. On the recommendation of the finance committee the board decided to inform the Director-General that it considers it is doing little enough for nurses who contract tuberculosis while in its employ, and it wishes to adhere to its present policy of paying such nurses as follows: — A nurse who contracts tuberculosis and is living in, while an inmate of the board's institutions receives half pay. When discharged from the institutions she receives half pay, plus the full living out allowance. A nurse who contracts tuberculosis and is living out receives half pay, plu e full living out allowance, whether or no. she is a patient in I one of the board's institutions. J
