CHARGE OF MURDER
CHRISTCHURCH TRAGEDY
ACCUSED MAN REMANDED (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Corporal Roy Kitchiner Kennedy, aged 29, of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, was charged before Mr. A. A. McLachlan, S.M., to-day with the murder of Edgar Williams, aged 47, railway guard, stepfather of Kennedy's wife. Detective-Sergeant A. A. Herron said a good deal of inquiry would be necessary, and Mr. C. S. Thomas, counsel for accused, consented, to a remand to October 9. The Kennedys have three young children. Mr. Williams was shot in the face outside his home in Page's Road, Sandilands, about 9.30 p.m. on Saturday, and died in the Christchurch Hospital at 5 a.m. on Sunday. It is alleged that a man called at Mr. Williams' house, leaving a taxi waiting. It is believed that when he returned to the taxi he was followed by Mr. Williams. A shot was then heard. Mr. Williams was found on the footpath with his face severely injured. Kennedy was arrested yesterday in a hut at Rolleston. **
