MINERS' TRANSPORT
QUESTION OP PAYMENT WHANGAREI. Sunday. A further stage has been reached in arranging transport for miners living at Hikurangi and working at the Kamo coalmines. The No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr. E. J. Phelan, has approved of the running of a special bus, the timetable to coincide with the shifts at the mine. The charge will be at the rate of 1/6 a mile. On receipt of the approval from the authority, the bus company communicated with the Mines Department, stating that until the question of payment was satisfactorily settled the company would not commence the service. When the application was before the authority at a sitting in Whangarei, Mr. D. L. Ross, for the company, stated that previously an agreement had been made whereby-the bus company was to transport the miners and a subsidy was to be paid for the service. Only a small amount of the subsidy had been paid, there being still £99 owing the company, which could not get satisfaction from the Mines Department
