ABATTOIR PAY
EMPLOYEES' SUGGESTIONS
Labour difficulties at the Auckland abattoir in the January—April period, formed the subject of a report adopted at last night's City Council meeting. The abattoir manager stated that it had been suggested that rates of pay at the abattoir were not sufficiently attractive for labourers, and that action be taken to increase the remuneration by a bonus system or, alternatively, by the introduction of a piecework rate for hourly workers. He was.not prepared to support the allegations, and thought that the difficulty experienced was not due to the earnings of the labourers being unattractive, but rather to the unsuitability of limited labour available.
The employees had requested a piecework rate of pay for all labour and had been promised that the matter would receive consideration. The main factor in labour cost was output and this could not. be stabilised, but fluctuated considerably. Difficulty would be experienced in attempting to enumerate the work to be performed for a specific rate. At present the labour position was satisfactory, arid it was recommended that a reply be made to the abattoir employees that a piecework system of rates of pay was not suitable for the abattoir activities.
