THE ALBERT CANAL, which connects Antwerp on the Scheldt with Liege on the Meuse and was named after the Belgians' beloved King Albert. This picture was taken in May, 1940, when the R.A.F. was endeavouring to hamper the efforts of German engineers to repair damaged bridges (centre) destroyed by retreating Belgians. As the Allies advance the Germans are endeavouring to make a stand along the canal.
